We have more in common with high fashion than you’d think – we both know that the quality of the cut makes all the difference.

The Story of Knightsbridge
Unlike many London districts, Knightsbridge didn’t grow from some pretty, semi-rural village. It was a wasteland, a space that fell between four parishes, unloved and untended. Highwaymen, robbers and generally dodgy characters relished this no-mans-land. It had a bridge (naturally) and a few disreputable hostelries: nothing quaint here.
Then its history starts to converge with the rest of London’s areas. As the metropolis grew, it wolfed down land, consuming Knightsbridge’s desolate lands and replacing them with shops and houses. By the time the Victorian premium stores and embassies began to move in, Knightsbridge had undergone one of the most dramatic character changes until Anakin Skywalker.
Harrods and Harvey Nicks were the real behemoths of this new retail makeover. Over the decades, high-end brands opened their signature stores here – together, of course, with some of the best food and drink on offer in the capital…
Zelman in Harvey Nichols
Harvey Nichols is one of the most iconic names in the world of retail. It began as a small but determined linen shop in 1831. Stealthily it grew, initially spreading into the house next door, then gradually taking over the whole row. Today’s flagship store stands on the original site, as testament to what hard work and ambition can achieve.
Then in 1975, Harvey’s opened. This was the first-fifth floor restaurant in the department store, and customers have enjoyed a retail pause there ever since. These days, there’s a whole collection of places to eat and drink on the fifth floor. This buzz is perfect for the playful and dynamic Zelman experience.
While You’re In Knightsbridge…
It’s easy to lose a day in Harvey Nichols itself, but that would be to miss the whole spectacle of Knightsbridge. Harrods is obligatory, but don’t neglect Knightsbridge’s other shops, as diverse as Baker & Spice, Jimmy Choo, John Sandoe Books…
Not of the retail persuasion? Admire the Neoclassical elegance of the Brompton Oratory on Brompton Road, modelled on the Church of the Gesu in Rome. Breathe in the green beauty of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Then of course, there’s the triumvirate of world-renowned museums in South Kensington: the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum and the V&A.
Come up to the fifth floor at night and take in the whole brightly lit and buzzing vista. Wild indeed.
Seeking Out Zelman Meats Knightsbridge
It’s hard to miss Harvey Nicks. We’re right at the top, and a direct access lift takes you straight up to the store’s dining area.
Harvey Nichols is just two minutes’ walk from Knightsbridge tube station, which is served by the Piccadilly Line. Get off earlier at either Hyde Park Corner or Green Park (east) or South Kensington (west), and take a stroll through the world’s most exclusive real estate. If you like dramatic Victorian architecture, don’t forget to look up as well as you walk.
