What is Picanha steak?
Picanha Steak, also known as sirloin cap or rump cap, is a popular cut of beef originating from Brazil and other parts of South America. Its name, Picanha, comes from the word 'picana', which was a pole used by South American cowboys to herd cattle. Eventually, this word came to represent this specific cut of beef due to its traditional preparation.
One thing that makes the Picanha steak unique is its rich flavour profile. It's incredibly juicy and packed with a bold, beefy flavour. It’s marbled with just the right amount of fat that keeps the steak juicy, tender and moist, especially when cooked right. What really makes Picanha unique is the large layer of fat that runs across one side of the cut. When this fat is left on during cooking, it melts into the steak, enhancing its flavour and tenderness.
Picanha steak is traditionally cooked on a rotisserie over an open fire, with the fat side facing up, allowing it to baste the meat as it cooks. This imparts a deliciously smoky flavour into the steak, resulting in a delectable combination of beefiness, smokiness and a touch of saltiness.

Of course, you’ll want something exceptional to pair with your Picanha steak. We always recommend a bold red from our wine list, such as the divine 2020 Neverland, Cabernet Sauvignon. However, our wine list comprises a selection of other incredible reds. Malbec, single vineyard Carmenere, Tempranillo and bold and flavourful Pinot Noir all grace the Zelman Menu.
You can pop a bottle of something sparkling if you’re celebrating a special occasion… or even just a regular occasion. If you’d prefer a beer instead, the drinks menu also includes fantastic Meantime Pale Ale, Birra Moretti, Peroni Libera and Sassy Cider Brut. Not to mention some sensational cocktails.
